Owners of seven malnourished horses seized from a home last week are now facing charges of animal cruelty. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office on Friday said the State Attorney's Office issued a warrant for Jerry Conley, 58, who was arrested on Thursday and charged with eight misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. A similar warrant has been issued for his girlfriend, Jillian Medina, 25, who now lives in Pasco County.  

After receiving an audit of the Maury County Animal Shelter, members of the board tasked with overseeing the facility must now hash out how to implement its recommendations. The study, conducted by the Humane Society of United States and paid for by the nonprofit Pet Pals of Maury County, was commissioned after problems led the county to take over ownership and operation of the facility. Originally the shelter was a joint operation between the county, Columbia and Pet Pals, which would run day-to-day

A fire marshal for the Southern Stone County Fire Department says the Interactive Zoo and Aquarium, formerly known as Predator World, can't be open for business. The fire marshal on Friday pulled the occupancy permit after a surprise inspection. The Stone County Sheriff's Department, the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force, and Fire Marshal David Gyger served a search warrant on the business on Friday morning.  

The Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals---the S.P.C.A..---is caught in a cruel squeeze. The sour economy is causing donors to give less, while-- at the same time-- it's forcing more pet owners to give up their pets. If supporters don't step up, animals in need of adoption may lose this safe haven.  

Carbon County Friends of Animals now has six dog houses that can be utilized in the county. On Monday, shelter volunteers traveled to Youth Services Agency of Pennsylvania in Jim Thorpe to pick up the dog houses that were created by seven students at the facility. Ed Weaver, vocational coordinator at Youth Services Agency, said the projects were part of a partnership formed three years ago between Youth Services Agency and the Carbon Career & Technical Institute.  

A non-profit organization based in Knoxville is working locally to help transport rescued animals to good homes. Pilot Jim Carney took time to Friday to speak the virtues of the program, Pilots N Paws. "I can still fly, which I love, and I can help dogs," he said. "I'm a dog lover, and I can help animals get to their new homes and hopefully forever homes."

Warrants have been issued for an Anderson County Animal Control officer and his estranged wife, who's an animal rescue worker. Both are facing 92 charges each of ill treatment of animals. Deputies investigating a report of maltreatment at an Anderson home found several dead animals and seized 177 dogs, a cat and a bird.  

Idaho Sen. Tim Corder, R-Mountain Home, was at the Idaho Cattle Association Convention in Sun Valley Tuesday, Nov. 17, to ask cattlemen to help develop animal cruelty legislation. Corder, chairman of the Senate Agricultural Affairs Committee, has been preparing two bills on the issue. Animal welfare groups and the Idaho State Department of Agriculture have been at the table.

Several Triad animal shelters have been warned that their use of carbon monoxide chambers to euthanize animals didn't comply with new state rules. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Animal Welfare Section said it has cited 21 North Carolina animal shelters since beginning enforcement in September. The new rules took effect in July. Some of the shelters have since come into compliance.
